Wiesner, Karel Frantisek

Karel Wiesner; Charles Wiesner (November 23, 1919-November 28, 1986)

RNDr in Physical Chemistry, 1945, Univerzita Karlova v Praze (Charles U, Prague), in J. Heyrovský’s department for research.

Studied Chemical Engineering at the Prague Institute of Technology & at Charles U simultaneously.

During WW II Charles U was closed by the Nazis, so he conducted his research without direction or supervision (and inspired by interaction with the school of J. Heyrovský) in the research department of Bulovka Hospital, in a pharmaceutical firm and in a laboratory at home. During these war years he collaborated with Koutecký and within the school of Prof. Heyrovský. Charles U reopened after the war, and in October 1945 he was awarded a Doctor of Natural Sciences degree by the J. Heyrovsky Institute for his work

For two years (1947-1948), Wiesner studied organic chemistry under Valdo Prelog at ETH, Zürich

Heterocycles, 1977, 7, 1-28; 29-35; volume dedicated to Woodward on the occasion of his 60th birthday

* The Woodward-Ashdown connection deserves a special explanation. This is what some persons who knew him have to say:

James Flack Norris:

“We saw we had a person who possessed a very unusual mind and we wanted to let it function at its best. If the red tape necessary for the less brilliant mind had to be cut, we let it go. We did for Woodward what we have done for no other student like him in our department. We think he will make a name for himself in the scientific world”. For references, vide infra Wasserman and Ollis.

Slightly different version cited by Dolphin (vide infra):

“We saw we had in our midst a person who possessed a very unusual mind. We wanted to let it function at its best. If the red tape, which was necessary for other less brilliant students had to go, we cut it. We did for Woodward what we have done for no other student in our department, for we have had no student like him in our department. And we think he will make a name for himself in the scientific world”...“But unlike some scholars, he will not burn out suddenly”.

Harry H. Wasserman:

a) “When he entered the Massachusetts Institute of Technology at age 16 he found the pace of the prescribed chemistry curriculum too slow for his advanced preparation; his restlessness and boredom caused him to be expelled from the institute. Fortunately the faculty at M.I.T. recognized that in Woodward they had a unique student, and they were willing to reinstate him and to bend the rules by arranging a curriculum specially suited to him. The following quotation from professor James Flack Norris of M.I.T. expresses the sentiments of the Institute on the award of the Ph.D. to Woodward at age 20”. Then Wassermann cites Norris’ quotation (vide supra); Heterocycles, 1977, 7, 1-28

b) “At the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the faculty recognized that he was a unique student and they bent the rules by arranging a special program for him whereby at age 20 he received both Bachelor’s and Doctorate degrees” Derek Barton and H. Wassermann, Tetrahedron, 1981, 37, supplement No. 1, vii; Woodward Memorial Issue.

c) “In answer to your question, the young Woodward, considered to be a genius, was allowed to pursue his doctoral research on his own. For administrative purposes, he was assigned a supervisor, AVERY ASHDOWN. Both his undergraduate and his graduate study were completed in four years” Personal e-mail communication, Thu, 17 Jun 2004

David Dolphin:

“His last and fourth year at Tech, Woodward describes as his happiest, for he was able to spend his time in the research laboratory where he could resume his experiments, which he had begun in his second year at the Institute, on the female hormone. He did this work independently and wrote his thesis on it”. Dolphin also cites Norris’ quotation (vide supra); Heterocycles, 1977, 7, 29-35

W. D. Ollis:

“The graduate and postgraduate training of R. B. Woodward has produced a fund of stories. However, on this occasion it is appropriate to limit comment to Dr. James Flack Norris, a well-known member of the Faculty at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. In June 1937, Dr. Norris stated simply, (vide supra, Norris’ quotation)”. Chem. in Brit. 1980, 16, 210-216.

William C. Agosta:

“I was a PhD student with R. B. Woodward at Harvard in the early 1950's. No one ever spoke about Woodward's PhD mentor, as he was something of a special case. He got his PhD at MIT around 1938. After he flunked out as a sophomore, Woodward was readmitted, graduated, and received his doctorate, all in about three years total time. Or so went the story when we were graduate students. As you probably know, Woodward is considered by many to have been the greatest organic chemist of the twentieth century. (Others consider him as one of the two greatest, the other being Sir Robert Robinson.) He was the sole recipient of the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1965”. Personal e-mail communication, Mon, 07 Jun 2004

Louis Fieser and Mary Fieser:

Woodward contemporaries at Harvard, in their books with scientists’ biographical information, they mention Woodward got his PhD degree at MIT, but left the advisor information blank. Fieser & Fieser, Advanced Organic Chemistry, Reinhold, NY, 1961

Martin Saunders:

So far all the previous information seems to indicate that Woodward had no PhD advisor and did his thesis research on his own. Moreover, he does not mention Ashdown in his PhD thesis acknowledgements. On June 29, 2004 I visited Professor Saunders at his Yale university office. He told me Woodward did his PhD research on his own, however he was required by the MIT to have an advisor, and this advisor was Ashdown. Interestingly, Saunders added that Woodward himself used to trace his own chemical genealogy to some famous German organic chemists, and he would do this through Ashdown. Since Woodward considered Ashdown in his genealogy, I decided to include him as well. MNV, Aug. 20, 2004.
